The Love of the Dark Side by Will Dauk

“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” This quote by Yoda demonstrates the Jedi view of the dark side as being the pinnacle of evil. The Jedi code is as follows. “There is no emotion; there is peace. There is no ignorance; there is knowledge. There is no passion; there is serenity. There is no chaos; there is harmony. There is no death; there is the Force.” The way of the Jedi stresses the importance of being a neutral force in all situations. It is interesting to see that the first part of the Jedi code is that they are to release all emotions. For many, emotions are the path to the dark side of the force. The most obvious example being Anakin’s love for Padme drives him to do anything to save her from dying; he learns that the dark side might give him the tools to save Padme. Love is not a bad thing, and the sith are the only ones who permit it. The Jedi and the sith represent two extremes of Force users. The Jedi have no emotions, control their feelings, and let all that might cause them to make a bad decision. The Sith let their emotions drive them, and hold onto the feelings that make them human, such as anger, pity, and love. Because the sith are allowed these human emotions, they are susceptible to making the same mistakes that humans do. The Jedi, who choose not to walk those paths do not make these mistakes.

The idea that humans make mistakes is an important part of Star Wars. Nobody can be perfect, and this is clear when you look at the Jedi and the Sith, they both have a tragic flaw that causes them to fail. For the Jedi, their tragic flaw is their laws and rules. The ridged structure of the Jedi code does not allow for them to vent their emotions, causing them to pile up and eventually come crashing down around the Jedi’s shoulders. This brought about the fall of a number of Jedi, including Anakin Skywalker. The Sith also have a tragic flaw, they submerse themselves in their emotions, and let them guide their actions, causing them to make rash decisions.

The biggest difference between the Sith and the Jedi, is how they wish to impact history. The Jedi choose to allow history to take its course and try to have as little impact as possible with the course of things. The Sith on the other hand choose to try to alter history and do not allow for it to carry out the way it would if they were not a part of it. The Sith alter the fate of history, the Jedi do not.

I think you could have gone a little more in depth with this essay. Do the built up emotions always come crashing down? Are the emotions always built up? Otherwise this essay was really well written.

You have a good point. This is all true. The Jedi and Sith aren't fully right in their views and their rules. The Jedi are too ridgid and as can be seen in the novels set after "Return of the Jedi", Luke Skywalker reforms the Jedi Order and makes it known that Jedi can married... BUT they can't let their emotions cloud their vision.
The Sith let their emotions cloud their vision and while feeling is good, all rationality can be thrown out the window if one is not careful.
Good job!

I liked the way that you opened your paper with the quote. I think that you made several good points in your essay. I liked the fact that you talked about the differences between the Jedi and the Sith. I find it interesting that the Jedi try and control all of their emotions but the Sith let their emotions guide them. In some way humans are like the more like the Sith than the Jedi, most of the time humans let their emotions guide their actions. I think that you could have given more examples of different the characters in Star Wars. Overall I think that it was well written, good job.

I had a little trouble figuring out what your thesis was. At first, you seemed to be comparing the Jedi and the Sith, but you then started talking about tragic flaws before going back to the original subject. I think your problem wasn't so much the ideas as a lack of connection to tie the whole paper together. However, I do think that you did a good job of showing the contrast between the Sith and the Jedi, especially how these differences turned many Jedis to the dark side.

Great job on showing the difference between the Sith and the Jedi. I dissagree with the whole emotions of the Sith thing. they aren't nesacerily evil, just diferent then the Jedi. anyway, awesome work.

“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” I Agree With This Statment Completleyy. Even Though Darth Vador Was A Part Of The Dark Side, He Was Able To Over Come It With Love... Thats Just Myy Opinion.

"Best essay ever written. Hands Down." Uh huh...

Honestly Will, this essay left me utterly confused. The first paragraph rambled, and I couldn't find anything that resembled a thesis. You talked about emotion, tragic flaws and impacting history. I don't see the link. If there was a conclusion, it didn't jump out at me. The whole paper just ended too suddenly.

Some of the content seemed generalized. For example, "This brought about the fall of a number of Jedi, including Anakin Skywalker." Really? Who are the others? I'd have to disagree until you can offer specific examples. In your third paragraph, you state that the Jedi prefer to stay out of history's way. Clarify that statement. When Obi-Wan went to Mustafar to battle Anakin, he intended to alter history. Obviously, the Sith like control, but I think the Jedi still alter fate.

Good use of the Jedi Code, but cite where you got it from. I highly doubt you have that memorized.

Overall, some decent comparisons/contrasts. Work on intros and conclusions. Please.

I really liked your topic and the way you put it together. I think you should of went more in depth with the emotions, maybe more examples. I did like the example of anikans love for padme turns him to the dark side, desperate to do anything to save her. You did an amazing job overall. =)
